House of Representatives passes bills to boost investments

In July 2018, the House of Representatives came together in a bipartisan fashion to pass a suite of bills to boost investments in loan repayment, primary care training, scholarships, and continuing education for America’s health workforce. The programs fund a range of initiatives including diversity training/education, pediatric and adult dentistry, and academic health partnerships that expand the diversity, geography, and skills of health care workers throughout the nation. In particular, the House’s package included H.R. 3728, the EMPOWER Act, which reauthorizes the health professions workforce programs in Titles VII & VIII of the Public Health Service Act and will ensure that geriatric care, primary care, and improving the skills of our health care workforce are issues that stay on Congress’ agenda. As of the writing of this report, the Senate has not scheduled a vote on this legislation.
